Enter the world of romance and tragedy at the Hermitage Theatre, an 18th-century architectural gem in the heart of the Winter Palace. The Imperial Ballet’s dancers, trained at Russia’s prestigious ballet academies, bring Giselle to life with breathtaking grace and emotional depth. Enhanced by stunning video effects, this classic ballet unfolds with a modern, mesmerizing visual flair. Experience a performance where timeless storytelling, artistry, and historic surroundings create an unforgettable evening of ballet magic.

The mystical legend of the doomed brides, retold by the 19th-century German poet Heinrich Heine, became a masterpiece of world ballet thanks to the poignant music composed by Adolphe Adam and the choreographic genius of Marius Petipa, who created the definitive version of Giselle.

The drama and emotional depth, the lyricism and musicality of this ballet, enveloped in an aura of mystery, make the audience empathize with the characters from the very first notes to the final chord.

"Dressed in bridal gowns, crowned with flowers… irresistibly beautiful, the wilis dance in the moonlight, dancing more passionately and faster the more they feel their allotted hour for the dance is ending, and they must return to their cold, icy graves…" - H. Heine

The performance combines classical sets and costumes with multimedia projections on the theatre walls. This design enhances the emotional intensity and drama of the plot, allowing the audience to feel at the very center of the unfolding events and experience new aesthetic sensations.

Synopsis

Young Count Albert falls in love with a village girl, Giselle. Fearing that his noble status might frighten her away, he meets her disguised as a peasant boy, forgetting that he already has a fiancée, Bathilde, who belongs to his social class. Giselle reciprocates his feelings.

Hans, a local forester also in love with Giselle, orchestrates the revelation of Albert’s true identity in front of Giselle and Bathilde. Unable to bear the betrayal, Giselle loses her mind and dies.

The wilis - ghosts of brides who died before their weddings -seek to ensnare lost travelers in the cemetery. Hans, tormented by guilt, falls victim to the wilis’ ghostly circle and collapses. Albert faces the same fate, but the spirit of Giselle, whose selfless love endures, protects him from the wrath of the wilis and saves him.
