The St Petersburg Northern Sinfonia Orchestra
The St Petersburg Northern Sinfonia Orchestra of the Music Hall Theatre (since March 2023 – of the Feodor Chaliapin Musical Theatre) was founded on 1 June 2016. The ensemble’s Artistic Director and Principal Conductor is Fabio Mastrangelo, who also serves as Artistic Director of the theatre.
Today the Northern Sinfonia is among St Petersburg’s leading orchestras. It has collaborated with renowned soloists such as pianists Ekaterina Mechetina, Polina Osetinskaya, Stanislav Chigadaev, Oleg Vainshtein, Giuseppe Albanese and Ludovico Troncanetti; violinists Sergei Girshenko, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Graf Mourja and Alexei Lundin; cellists Sergei Roldugin and Denis Shapovalov; guitarist Dmitry Illarionov; saxophonist Ola Asdahl Rokkones; clarinettist Giampiero Sobrino; singers Ildar Abdrazakov, Larisa Dolina, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya and Svetlana Kasyan among others, as well as soloists of the Mariinsky and Mikhailovsky theatres and the St Petersburg Music House.
The orchestra’s extensive repertoire encompasses music from various periods and styles, including Russian and international classical works and compositions by contemporary composers.
In addition to its home venue, the orchestra regularly performs at the St Petersburg Philharmonia, the Concert Hall of the Mariinsky Theatre, the Gorky House of Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and other prestigious venues. The ensemble frequently participates in major events such as the St Petersburg International Festival All Together Opera, the Elena International Arts Festival, the Honorary Citizens of St Petersburg festival, programmes of the St Petersburg International Cultural Forum, the St Petersburg International Book Salon and the Music of the Palace Bridge festival.
The Northern Sinfonia also maintains an active touring schedule. In 2019 it took part in the Russian Seasons project in Germany and performed in Italy and Estonia. As part of the Festival of Russian Musical Theatres Seeing the Music, the orchestra appeared in Don Pasquale at the Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow (2019) and Die Fledermaus at the Helikon Opera (2021).
Highlights of the 2021–22 season included the multimedia musical project Zhivago. I Stepped onto the Stage… and concert programmes such as The Russian Path. From Musorgsky to Prokofiev, In the Beginning Was the Word, The Russian Waltz, The Leningrad Notebook, Light of Hope and others. In September 2021 the orchestra, joined by the theatre’s chorus and soloists, premiered a new production of Die Zauberflöte conducted by Fabio Mastrangelo.
In 2023 the orchestra presented programmes dedicated to Rachmaninoff at various venues, including the Mariinsky Theatre. It also performed Passions According to Shakespeare at the St Petersburg State Capella and numerous other concerts.
During the 2023–24 season the Northern Sinfonia celebrated anniversaries of Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Ostrovsky and Pushkin; performed a Brahms cycle; and presented concerts including Life in Music (marking Fabio Mastrangelo’s birthday), I Speak to You from Leningrad (commemorating the 80th anniversary of the complete lifting of the Siege of Leningrad), I Serve Russia! (Defender of the Fatherland Day), These Days Will Resound in Glory (Victory Day) and My Fate Is Russia! (Russia Day) among many others.
