Organ

Thomas Ospital was born in 1990 in Ayherre (Basque Country, France). Trained at the Conservatoire de Bayonne under Esteban Landart. In 2008 he took 1st prize among other organ students at the conservatoire. He then entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he took four 1st prizes – in organ performance, harmony, counterpoint and fugue. He was taught by such outstanding musicians as Olivier Latry, Michel Bouvard and Pierre Pincemaille. Ospital is currently a final-year student at the conservatoire, learning the art of improvisation under Thierry Escaich, László Fassang and Jean-François Zygel.

In 2002 the musician received the Maurice Duruflé Prize and the Audience Award at the International Organ Competition in Chartres, in 2009 he took 1st prize at the International Organ Competition in Saragossa and in 2013 he won 2nd prize at the Competition in Toulouse. In May 2014 he received the Grand Prix Jean-Louis Florentz and the Audience Award at the Concours d’Angers, run by the Académie des Beaux-Arts of France. In November the same year he won 2nd prize, the Audience Award and the Jean-Louis Florentz Prize at the International Competition in Chartres.

In 2012 as part of a special programme for young performers Thomas Ospital spent six months in New Orleans (USA) where he was a regular organist at the Cathedral of St Louis. In 2015 he was the resident organist of the Festival of Sacred Music in Rocamadour. In March 2015 he became the resident organist of the Église Saint-Eustache in Paris. Moreover, since 2006 he has been the resident organist of the Église Saint-Vincent in Ciboure where he performs an organ crafted by Dominique Thomas.

Thomas Ospital dedicates much of his time to organ improvisation. The musician frequently performs recitals in France and internationally as well as appearing in chamber and symphony concerts.
