Wing Chun is a dance drama that integrates martial arts and dance, employing a dual narrative technique which interweaves two timelines. One follows Yip Man’s journey as he ventures into Hong Kong with the dream of promoting Wing Chun. The other depicts the experiences of filming the movie Wing Chun by Shenzhen’s crew, who are inspired by Yip Man’s spirit and persevere through difficulties in pursuit of their cinematic dreams. The story begins with a “hero”, unfolds through “light seekers”, ultimately highlighting the pursuit of “ideals”. Portraying the image of a Chinese hero and serves as a tribute to ordinary people, blending the beauty of dance with Chinese martial arts into a unique artistic creation.

1990s, Shenzhen Film Studio, China.

A young lighting technician named Da Chun joins the film crew of Wing Chun, filled with curiosity about all the new experiences and the wonders of montage. When the crew faces difficulties, he begins to contemplate ideals. The story of the protagonist, Yip Man, awakens an inner strength in Da Chun. He practices diligently by the wooden dummy, and dances in the glow with Master Yip. A midst confusion and harsh realities, he seeks, feels, learns and integrates with Yip Man, ultimately mastering martial arts. He finds his direction in both life and art, becoming a beacon of light for both the hero and himself.

The Shenzhen Opera and Dance Theatre was established on 28 March 2018. It includes an opera troupe, a dance troupe and a choir, with a total of 140 members. The theatre is primarily focused on creating and performing operas and dance dramas, along with providing public cultural services and fostering cultural exchange.

Aiming to blend Chinese style with contemporary trends and an international perspective, the theatre seeks to become a respected art institution in China. It produces both classical and modern works, telling Chinese stories while preserving traditional culture. Since its founding the theatre has created several original works, including the operas Daughter of the Earth and The Pioneer, the contemporary dance drama Dream Chaser and the dance drama Wing Chun. The last of them is particularly notable for creatively combining the Chinese intangible cultural heritage of Xiangyun Sha (a traditional silk fabric) and Wing Chun (a form of martial arts), highlighting the beauty of dance and the strength of Chinese martial arts.

The theatre has also participated in significant events, such as the Shenzhen segment of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony, the Shenzhen segment of the 2019 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, the annual Shenzhen Spring Festival Gala from 2019 to 2024, and the 40th-anniversary celebration of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. Looking ahead, the theatre will continue its efforts to pursue artistic quality, with a focus on creativity and innovation. It remains dedicated to supporting Shenzhen’s cultural development and contributing to broader cultural aims through its artistic work.
