Elena Popovskaya (soprano) studied music theory, composition and singing (Margarita Landa’s class) at the Gnessins Musical College. In 1997, the singer graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory (Professor Kadinskaya’s class).
She joined the Novaya Opera Theatre in 1998. Elena made her debut at the Bolshoi as Lisa in a new production of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades in 2007 (music director and conductor Mikhail Pletnev).
Elena Popovskaya extensively tours abroad - in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Israel and other countries. She appeared as Renata in Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel at Theatre Royal de la Monnaie (Brussels, 2006; conductor Kazushi Ono, stage director Richard Jones) and as Lisa in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades at the Latvian National Opera (Riga, 2007). In 2008, Elena Popovskaya was the first Russian soprano to perform Turandot at Puccini’s Festival in Torre del Lago in Italy. Her repertoire also comprises the following parts: Maria in Tchaikovsky’s Mazepa, Tosca in Puccini’s Tosca, and the soprano part in Shostakovich’s Symphony 14.
In 2010, Elena Popovskaya sang the title role in Strauss’s Elektra (conducted by Gustav Kuhn), Manon in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at Luciano Pavarotti Teatro di Modena. This summer the singer will perform the title role in Franco Zeffirelli’s new production of Puccini’s Turandot at Arena di Verona, conducted by Placido Domingo.
