Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio Carolyn Mae Jantsch studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy and took private lessons with James Atkins, Thomas Riccobono, Roger Bobo, Wesley Jacobs and Fritz Kaenzig (continuing to the present day). Since 2002 she has been studying at the University of Michigan. Ensembles she has played in include the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra (1999-2002, Principal Tuba), the Traverse Symphony Orchestra (2000-2002, Principal Tuba), the University of Michigan Symphony Band and Symphony Orchestra (since 2002), the Philadelphia Orchestra (2005-2006, Substitute Tuba) and various brass quintet bands. Her awards and honors include winning the Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestra Tuba Audition, Second Place Young Artists Division, ITEC 2002 Solo Competition, the Columbus Symphony Young Artists Competition. She was a runner-up in the Kalamazoo Concert Band Youth Solo Competition, and received a Young Artist Award from Interlochen Arts Academy 2002. In addition, Jantsch has been awarded top prizes in other competitions, such as 1st prize at the 2004 Markneukirchen Tuba Competition and 1st prize at the Solo Tuba Competition of the International Tuba and Euphonium Congress held in Budapest, Hungary in 2005. The latter is one of the most prestigious low brass competitions in the world, and was a major triumph for the 19-year-old American. Despite playing the tuba, which has not been traditionally considered a solo instrument, Carolyn Mae Jantsch is becoming one of the world’s major solo tuba artists. In February 2006 she won the Philadelphia Orchestra Tuba Audition and will assume new position in summer 2006.
