Graduated from St Anthonyґs College in Oxford, where he studied history and philosophy. Made his directorial debut at Covent Garden (Peter Grimes with Jon Vickers in the main role, conducted by Colin Davis); there he also directed, among other productions, Lohengrin, The Rakeґs Progress and Stiffelio, which was awarded a Laurence Olivier Award as "Best opera". He has staged many works for the English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, La Scala, the Paris Opйra and many other theatres throughout Europe. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera with Un ballo in maschera together with Luciano Pavarotti and Katia Ricciarelli. He revived Ariadne auf Naxos with Jesse Norman and Otello with Placido Domingo (conducted by Valery Gergiev). Under Gergievґs direction he staged The Queen of Spades. Moshinsky often works in drama, television and cinema. At Londonґs West End Theatre he has produced classical works (Much Ado about Nothing, Cyrano de Bergerac, Three Sisters and Ivanov) as well as contemporary plays. The 1992 production of Shadowlands with Nigel Hawthorne was awarded a Tony prize for "Best directing of the year". At the Royal Shakespeare Company he has staged Lord of the Flies and Richard III. With the BBC he has produced several plays by Shakespeare and Ibsenґs Ghosts amongst other works.
