Yuri Marusin was born in Kizel in the Urals. He studied music at an early age and initially performed with a folk ensemble. In 1970 he was accepted into the Leningrad Conservatoire graduating in 1975 with honours, already being engaged as a soloist with the Maly Opera Theatre in Leningrad since 1972.
During the 1977-78 season he studied at La Scala in Milan where he subsequently sang the leading tenor roles in ‘Gianni Schicchi‘, ‘Madama Butterfly‘, ‘Boris Godunov‘ and other roles in both Western and Russian repertory. In 1982 he was awarded the Verdi Prize as the best foreign singer at La Scala for his performance of Gabriele Adorno in ‘Simon Boccanegra‘ conducted by Claudio Abbado. He is also a laureate of many international competitions including the ‘Erkel‘ competition in Budapest, in Viotti, and in Pleven, Bulgaria.
Since 1980 Yuri Marusin has been a leading soloist at the Kirov Theatre in St Petersburg, where he has worked closely with Yuri Temirkanov and Valery Gergiev on a large number of new productions. His repertoire includes over 50 leading roles in Russian, French and Italian opera. He made his debut at the Vienna State Opera in 1986 and has sung a variety of roles there including Lensky, Dmitry, Golitsyn, Herman and Cavaradossi. His Salzburg Festival debut came in 1980 in the role of Don Juan in Dargomyzhski‘s opera "The Stone Guest". Other foreign appearances have taken him to the USA, Japan, Canada, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland. He was first heard in England in 1987 when the Kirov Opera gave a guest season at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 1992 he enjoyed immense critical acclaim as Herman in Graham Vick‘s new production of "The Queen of Spades" at Glyndebourne.
In the 1998-99 season Yuri Marusin has been invited to the Metropolitan Opera House to sing the role of Herman ("Pique Dame").

Complete recital programmes feature songs by Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Gliere, Cui, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Dargomyzhsky, Sviridov, Dvorak, Brahms, Schubert, Grieg, and others.
Has toured with the Mariinsky Theatre throughout Europe, Israel, the United States (Metropolitan Opera House) and Japan.
