Nikolai ALEXEEV was born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1956. He graduated from the Glinka Choir Academy and the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire in Leningrad, where he specialized in choral, operatic, and symphonic conducting studying under Avenir Mikhailov and Mariss Jansons. In 1982 Alexeev won the prestigious International Herbert von Karajan Foundation competition. Led the Ulyanovsk Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 2000. He conducted the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, and was the principal guest conductor of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. In the season 2001-2002 he became the artistic director and chief conductor of this orchestra. Nikolai Alexeev has been the permanent conductor of the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Yuri Temirkanov since 2000. He has toured with the St.Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and the leading European orchestras in Japan, the US, Portugal, Germany, Finland, Italy, Great Britain, and France.
