Alexander Romanovsky

Alexander Romanovsky was born in 1984 in Ukraine. Between the ages of five and twelve he studied piano under the teacher Svetlana Izmailova. By the age of eleven he had appeared on numerous occasions with the Moscow Virtuosi orchestra under Vladimir Spivakov in Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic States and France. At the age of thirteen he moved to Italy where he studied at the Piano Academy of Imola (class of Leonid Margarius, a pupil of Regina Horowitz). Graduated from the Academy in 2007 with a master’s degree. In 2008 Alexander Romanovsky received his Artist’s Diploma on completing his studies at the Royal College of Music in London (class of Dmitri Alexeyev). In 1999 he was awarded the title of Honorary Academician of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna for his performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations (only Mozart and Rossini had previously received this title at the age of fifteen).

In 2001, aged seventeen, he drew the world’s attention following his victory at the prestigious Ferruccio Busoni Festival in Bolzano. The following years have seen the musician perform countless concerts at venues throughout Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and the USA. In 2007 Alexander Romanovsky was invited to perform one of Mozart’s concerti for Pope Benedict XVI. In 2011 Alexander Romanovsky made successful debuts with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under Alan Gilbert and with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under James Conlon in addition to appearances with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Barbican Centre in London, the Russian National Orchestra under Mikhail Pletnev and the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala and recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

On numerous occasions he has received invitations to appear at renowned festivals in Europe, including those in La Roque-d’Anthйron and Colmar (France), the Ruhr Piano Festival (Germany), the Frйdйric Chopin Festival in Warsaw, the Stars of the White Nights festival in St Petersburg and the Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore festival in Italy among others.

Since 2007 Alexander Romanovsky has released three discs on the Decca label featuring works by Schumann, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven which have all won lavish praise from the critics. Anthony Tommasini of The New York Times referred to the album of works by Rachmaninoff as a towering achievement.

Romanovsky’s performances in the 2012–2013 season have included concerts with the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, the State Svetlanov Orchestra of Russia conducted by Alexander Vedernikov, the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Hallй Orchestra, a tour with the European Union Youth Orchestra under Krzysztof Urbaсski and recitals in Rome, Milan, Turin, Cardiff, Santiago and Tokyo.
Since 2013 Alexander Romanovsky has been Artistic Director of the Vladimir Krainev International Competition for Young Pianists.
