Rodion Shchedrin

Composer

Born
16 December 1932 in Moscow.

Education
At Moscow Choral College from 1945-1950. At Moscow Conservatory from 1950-1955 (composition under Shaporin; piano under Flier). Postgraduate studies from 1955-1959.

Principal Works
Three symphonies, five pianoconcertos, orchestral suites, chamber music, pianoworks, operas ("Not for Love Alone" and "Dead Souls"), ballets ("Humpbacked Horse", "Anna Karenina", "Seagull", "Lady with a Lapdog", etc.), vocal and choral music.

Style
His early works are written in an orthodox Soviet idiom. In the 1960s Shchedrin began incorporating different styles of music, such as Neoclassicism, pop music and jazz; in the 1970s he found his personal synthesis. Shchedrin defines his position as "post-avant-garde".
David Fanning wrote an essay on Shchedrin and his Symphony No. 2.
The composer himself wrote a counterstatement on several incorrect details and misinterpreations in Fanning‘s essay.
