Alexei Stepanyuk

Stage Director

After graduating from the Leningrad State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (directing class of Professor Tikhomirov), he started teaching at the directing and musical stage faculty. Currently a senior lecturer at the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire, where he teaches musical stage proficiency.
From 1987-1992 was Principal Stage Director of the Chelyabinsk Glinka Theatre of Opera and Ballet, where he staged Puccini?s La boheme, Saint-Saens? Samson et Dalila, Rimsky-Korsakov?s The Snow Maiden, Tchaikovsky?s Eugene Onegin, Banevich?s The Story of Kai and Gerda, Kalman?s Grafin Mariza and Rimsky-Korsakov?s The Tale of Tsar Saltan.

His first work for the Mariinsky Theatre was Rimsky-Korsakov?s Sadko (1993), which was performed on a tour to Paris and at the Edinburgh Festival. Both Philips Classics and NHK have made recordings of this production of Sadko (conducted by Valery Gergiev).
Alexei Stepanyuk has been Stage Director with the Mariinsky Theatre since 1994. He has staged productions of Rimsky-Korsakov?s The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia, Verdi?s La traviata and Aida , Stravinsky?s Les Noces, Bizet?s Carmen.

At London?s Albert Hall in October 1995 Alexei Stepanyuk staged a production of Borodin?s Prince Igor with the Mariinsky Opera Company and Valery Gergiev.
In 1998 at the San Francisco Opera he staged a production of Tchaikovsky?s Eugene Onegin with Yuri Temirkanov.
Works with the Kazan Theatre of Opera and Ballet, where he has staged Verdi?s La traviata, Tchaikovsky?s The Queen of Spades, Puccini?s La boheme and Rossini?s Il barbiere di Siviglia.
At the Novosibirsk Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet he staged Bizet?s Carmen and Verdi?s Rigoletto in 2002 and 2003.
In 2003 after a poll run by the Music Review newspaper the Theatre Union of Russia named Alexei Stepanyuk "Director of the Year".
In November 2004 he staged The Queen of Spades at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall.
